5 Tips to Help You Think and Design like an Architect

It’s not an easy task to design like an architect and while there isn’t one exact formula that every architect uses, there are some tips and techniques you can use to help you think like an architect when it comes to design. These 5 tips are sure to help you think like an architect and will get you on your way to designing like one too.

1) Take into account the scale

Architects have a lot of tricks up their sleeves for making space feel larger, or smaller. Scale is one of these tricks. When you design a room that feels too large, you can use furniture or elements within the space to make it feel more intimate. Conversely, if your space feels too small, adding furniture or elements can help make it seem larger.

2) Learn from your surroundings

One of the best ways to grow as an architect is by observing your surroundings. Whether you’re waiting for the bus, walking down the street, or taking a trip somewhere new, take mental notes about what you see. What’s inspiring? What’s irritating? What can you improve on?
#1: Observe New Places. Whenever I’m in a new place, I try to walk through it with my eyes open.

3) Work with what you have

1. Use the space you have. Architects know that every building starts with a blueprint – even if it’s just a sketch on paper. They use what they have in order to create something new. In your own home, try using the space you have for storage instead of buying more furniture or new cabinets. This will help you avoid clutter and feel organized without spending a fortune on new things.

4) Find inspiration in everyday things

Find inspiration in everyday things by looking at buildings, transportation systems, neighborhoods, and furniture. Everything is a potential source of creativity. Take a walk around your neighborhood or drive through town. Notice the scale of the buildings, how they relate to one another, what types of materials are used for construction–are they brick? stone? wood? metal? Pay attention to the details–how many windows are there on each floor of a building? How big are the windows relative to the size of the building’s facade?

5) Create a mood board

It’s important to know what you want your space to feel like before you start working on a design. This mood board will give you some ideas for things that might work in your space.
